DNR plan: Almost $10 million for Montello Dam
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource wants to make an investment of nearly $10 million in the Montello Dam.

t would be, according to the DNR's Steve Miller, the biggest outdoor-related project that the DNR plans to undertake in the coming years.

But people who live near Buffalo Lake, or who like to drop a fishing line in its waters, had several questions and comments Saturday when DNR officials, and the consultants working with them, unveiled their proposal at Montello High School.

One feature of the proposal that drew much discussion: it would entail drawing down Buffalo Lake for close to a year, to increase the ease of excavation. Miller added, however, that the drawdown also would provide long-term benefits to the lake's ecology, although he acknowledged it would be difficult for some to lose a season or more of fishing and other lake recreation.
