New York City Department of Environmental Protection
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection has maintained a successful debris management program for more than 20 years. A fleet of debis skimmer vessels are used to remove the floatable debris from boomed areas. Floating trash found in the open waters is also collected by a trash skimmer.
While generally effective, the existing fleet of trash skimmers had limitations that left the management program unable to meet all their Floatables Reduction Program objectives. Shallow water, strong currents, and long distances to unloading sites created challenging obstacles to efficiency.
