Citarum River - How to Save It
About 30 million people in the region around the Citarium River rely on this water basin, and it provides 80 percent of the Jakarta’s drinking water. The water is treated for consumption in larger towns and big cities, but in small villages such as Sukamaju the river water is pumped directly to the community. The villagers bathe, wash, and cook with the water. It is boiled before drinking, which kills bacteria, but it won’t get rid of the heavy metals and toxic chemicals from the industrial waste spewing into the river.

Phragmites Invasions Harm Riparian Ecology - Michigan has many areas where fires or flooding are an ongoing concern. The introduction of Phragmites and similar non-native invasive plants can increase those risks. The unchecked growth of invasive plants may change how water drains, drying out wetlands and creating situations for local flooding. This can create the potential for fire hazards, especially in the spring where last year’s dead and dry growth is still standing.
