Experimental Floating Wetlands
With $7,000 from grants and donations the Kootenai Environmental Alliance is attempting to combat the weed problem in the lake with more plants.

This 210 square foot patch of artificial wetland consists of a floating mesh base which has been planted with mulch and native wetland vegetation. Ideally, the roots seeping through the bottom with absorb the nutrients from water preventing the growth of additional aquatic weeds.

High levels of phosphorous in Hayden Lake have caused an explosion of aquatic vegetation to the point where boats are unable to get and cloudy water.

Gulf Of Mexico Dead Zone - A report from the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium has a grim outlook for the ocean basin. An annual algae bloom that decays and expends oxygen from the water, killing any biodiversity in the region, is expected to cause a hypoxic zone (also called a dead zone) to expand almost three times larger than normal.
