Native Aquatic Plant: Water Smartweed
In general, people don’t like “weeds” in their water, but a lot of the plant material seen growing in a water body is beneficial native plants like the Water Smartweed.

Water smartweed is both a terrestrial plant and aquatic plant; it can grow on land or in the water. It has beautiful pink flowers which bloom from June through September. Smartweed has a very important function in the ecosystem, as a terrestrial plant if provides erosion control along the shoreline while the aquatic form offers shade and shelter for fish as well as habitat for invertebrates.
