$3.5 million in grant money to repair Wisconsin Dams
Unfortunately $3.5 million doesn’t go very far when Wisconsin has roughly 3,800 dams with 1/3 of them being built before 1940, the next 1/3 have been built after that, and the remaining 1/3 is unknown.

There is not enough money to repair the dams in all communities, but the Wisconsin DNR is helping to address the most pressing needs to keep people and property safe. Fifteen of the roughly 3,800 dams in the State of Wisconsin will be receiving grant money, not to exceed $400,000; to provide maintenance, repair, modification, or abandonment and removal of dams owned by municipalities.

The priority rankings are based on a point system that looks at criteria including whether the dam poses a threat to people or property downstream, the project cost and community indebtedness. A DNR water management engineer will be contacting each of the communities to visit its dam site and meet with its community officials to discuss its project.

June 2008 flooding in southern Wisconsin caused estimated damages of at least $765 million dollars to businesses, residences, farm crops and public property constituted the state's costliest natural disaster ever; August 2007 floods in southern Wisconsin also caused significant damages
