Algae Scrubber to Help Baltimore's Harbor
In an attempt to cure Baltimore’s ailing harbor, advocates and authorities have tried many gadgets such as a floating wetlands, a solar-powered aerator, and even a trash wheel. This year an algal turf scrubber will be used to tackle the algae problem.

The Algal Turf Scrubber is a long wooden sluiceway that will pump harbor water over a bed of the green algae. The 350 foot by 1 foot gutter uses native algae to strip nutrients, suspendered sediment, and carbon from water and inject oxygen into it before returning it to the harbor. This contraption basically creates a controlled algae bloom which can be converted to organic fertilizer or even bio-fuel.
