DNR Takes to the Skies to Find Lakeshore Violations
Lakeshore owners on Detroit Lakes in Minnesota need to beware. Using a weed roller is a punishable offense and DNR agents are on the lookout for any form of aquatic plant management violations on the lake.
Agents have taken to the sky to spot violators. Their main goal is for research, wildlife surveys and law enforcement missions, which including looking for illegal fishing and hunting to habitat destruction and illegal use of recreational vehicles, but if they spot people using weed rollers they can be fined.
While lakeshore owners want to have a dock and well manicured swimming beaches, it often interferes with the habitat necessary to maintain a fish and other wildlife population. The shallow areas near the shoreline provide essential habitat and use of a weed roller requires a state permit.
