Despite Promises of Clean Up and Return to Pristine Water, No Progress Has Been Made
From October 3 to 14, 2010 Delhi hosted the Commonwealth Games. Monday will mark the completion of three years since the games concluded, and yet there is no end in sight for the environmental devastation caused preparation for the event.

The Neela Hauz Citizens’ Group was promised that no damage would be allowed to be cause to Aruna Asif Ali Marg and that once construction work was completed that all rubble would be removed and the “pristine glory of the lake restored”.

The promise included the removal of the water hyacinth chocking the lake and that a bio diversity park would be built on the land. However, the lake is more chocked with water hyacinth today than it was before the construction. There is only one patch where water is visible and this patch with filled with pieces of thermocol floating in it. The shores are full of rubble from trucks sneaking up at night and dumping their construction rubble along the banks.
