Draw Down Performed to Control Eurasian Watermilfoil
In an effort to control invasive Eurasian watermilfoil, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) will perform a drawdown on Chestnut Hill Reservoir this winter.

The watermilfoil was found several years ago and the infestation has caused elevated water temperatures and depressed dissolved oxygen levels. The floating mats of milfoil also pose drowning hazards to wildlife and pets.

As the plants are exposed to the cold air they freeze and die. The draw- down/freeze- off curbs milfoil naturally and eliminates the use of pesticides. The plan is to perform this procedure every winter for three years.

The Rebirth of Polluted Lake Apopka - In July 1980, Tower Chemical Company (TCC), a local pesticide manufacturer, improperly disposed of significant amounts of DDE, a known endocrine disruptor, along with other toxic chemicals. As a result, these chemicals spilled into Lake Apopka which has caused health problems in much of the lake's wildlife population, and has caused infertility and other sexual disorders in several species, including alligators.
