Golden Algae is Harmless to Humans but Detrimental to Fish
Native to coastal areas in Northern Europe such as the Baltic Sea, Golden Algae has evolved in the U.S. to prefer freshwater. This alga is unlike most other species as January is its peak blooming time as opposed to summer months.

Golden algae blooms phase out naturally; they grow gradually until they reach a peak and then decline. The algae it harmless to humans, but it creates toxins that kill gill-breathing creatures.

Lake Whatcom Water Quality Issues - The lack of oxygen is caused by algae growth which is fed by large quantities of phosphorous. The phosphorous comes from the soils and hillsides, but also comes from fertilizers and animal waste. In the summer of 2009 the city of Bellingham had to restrict water use because there was so much algae in the lake which was clogging the filters on the city water pipe and making it hard for water to get through.
