Nairobi Firm Eyes Lake Victoria Water Hyacinth for Electricity Production
Kenya’s quest to convert fish-threatening hyacinth weed in Lake Victoria into an electricity producing material has gained momentum with a Nairobi-based company being the latest to enter the venture.
Homa Bay Biogas One Ltd, Thursday expressed interest to construct a power plant in Homa Bay County to generate eight megawatts (MW) of electricity using the sea weed.

Microbes Aid in Establishment of Invasive Species
- Researchers are also testing the effects different sediments have on the growth of algae and have found that sediments associated with seagrass reduce algal growth. The results show that dense beds of seagrass are resistant to colonization of algae, but when seagrass beds decline due to other pressures the balance of microbes in the sediment changes, giving the algae a change to invade new areas.
