Successful Weed Harvesting Program

Lake Minnewawa Association has operated a successful weed harvesting program since 1982. What was once a lake full of weeds where boats couldn’t be used after July to a now beautiful lake with great fishing and other recreational value; the continuous improvement by members of the association should be applauded.

The weed harvesting program hit a snag mid season when the Minnesota government shut down. Although the harvester is not financed by the state, the government operated DNR which approves the permits and all necessary inspections is shut down, in turn has halted all weed harvesting in the state.

Minnesota Aquatic Plant Control May Require Permit - Aquatic plants serve many important functions in lakes; they prevent shoreline erosion, stabilize bottom sediments, provide habitat for fish and wildlife, and tie up nutrients that might otherwise grow algae. The removal of too many aquatic plants can impair their ability to perform these important functions.
