Garmin Working to Put Lake Winnebago on the Map
Garmin, the Kansas based company that manufactures global positioning system units for motorists, boaters, pilots, hikers, bicyclists and golfers is mapping Lake Winnebago in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Lake Winnebago is one of the largest inland lakes in the United States at 137,000 acres and survey crews will be spending the next two months taking photos of the lake’s bottom.

This information will be used to make Garmin’s marine GPS products more detailed than existing maps and provide better views of the lake bed as well as obstacles and other hazards. Similar mapping is currently under way on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota, Clear Lake in California and Lake Havasu in Arizona.

Starry Stonewort Battle Could Switch to Hand-to-Hand Combat - Lakes that are over-managed with chemical treatments, which can kill native plant species, can actually increase the spread of some non-native species. While the treatment may temporarily reduce a starry stonewort population, it also opens the door to future spreading by potentially killing native plants that would otherwise compete with the invasive species.
